Armchair TheatreWe’re delighted that you have joined us for this new venture for the Linlithgow Players. We’re also excited to know that producing an online event has meant that family and friends who live further afield can be part of the audience and we will have some international viewers as a result! For those who don’t know us, we are a community theatre in Linlithgow, providing opportunities for anyone in the town who wants to get involved in drama – onstage or backstage. Regular supporters of the Players will know that our usual programme over the Autumn and Winter months consists of our Plays and Wine event in October and the pantomime in January. At the heart of both of these events is the opportunity for all of our members to take part. Over the last 9 months, the group has continued to meet online, keeping folk connected and having fun with drama. Our online sessions have included monologue mash-ups, quiz nights, stars in their eyes and workshops run by the Scottish Community Drama Association. |
Early in the summer, we decided that an online event with an emphasis on monologues was the way to go for our next production given the restrictions. We have a few writers in the group and we guessed that maybe there were a few other writers out there who were stuck at home looking for a challenge! And so the Armchair Theatre monologue writing competition was born. We did not expect to receive so many entries (more than 50!). Thank you to all our entrants for your efforts and for giving our adjudicator, Malcolm McGonigle, such a difficult task.
Our intention was to perform the winning monologues and then offer some small cast sketches but new restrictions in terms of numbers that could meet meant that sketches became largely impossible. So, as well as some published works, we looked to other competition entries and selected a further 2 pieces that worked well with our programme.
