The Memory of WaterThe Linlithgow Players are set to offer us another engaging mix of laughs and drama with their exciting new production of The Memory of Water. This award-winning comedy by Shelagh Stephenson revolves around three sisters, with a husband and married lover in tow, who are reunited for their mother’s funeral.
Although dead, Vi, the glamorous misunderstood mother is central to the action. The daughters gather in her bedroom surrounded by the lingering aromas and possessions which evoke memories for them all. But Vi’s ongoing presence in the room, and in their lives, is deepened by her regular appearances to one of the daughters as a ghostly vision, and always in that green taffeta dress. So, who are the sisters? Meet the eldest, Teresa, the vitamin popping martyr, Mary, the middle one, smart and sarcastic, and the youngest, Catherine, the quirky drama queen. All face their own personal struggle as they come together but fall out over their different memories of their childhood. But this is not a female only production: we meet celebrity doctor Mike, Mary’s lover, and Frank, Teresa’s long-suffering husband who hates selling Royal Jelly to Albanians. And Catherine’s man? Well, she’s been to bed with 78 of them (who’s counting?) but Xavier, or is it Pepe, is still in Spain……. But if you think funeral preparations don’t sound like a recipe for laughs, prepare to be surprised. While challenging themes are explored as family relationships unravel and events from the past are re-visited, the play is also full of warmth, love, laughter and reconciliation, with great comic moments. With humour as much a guest at this funeral as grief, it promises the audience an emotional roller-coaster not to be missed! |
In recent years The Players have enjoyed taking their productions to a variety of new and different venues, including Donaldson's School and last year, to The Star and Garter hotel. This year we are delighted to be performing in The Burgh Halls, one of Linlithgow's landmark locations. This is the first time since the Halls were refurbished and restored in 2011, that The Players will have performed here, and we are very, very excited to be allowed to bring one of our plays to this iconic venue.
