SNOW
WHITE

Written by Derek Elsby

Winter is only a cold breeze away, so it’s the perfect time to cosy up and indulge in some of the classic and traditional stories of all time. Obviously, tales of Ebeneezer Scrooge and The Ice Queen will be on the cards for many in the coming months, though likely in the more palatable formats of ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ and ‘Frozen’. And come next January, as Winter draws to a close, the Linlithgow Players will be offering up their interpretation of another classic tale: Snow White.

Directed by Player’s veteran Liz Drewett, rehearsals are in full swing and the play is coming together beautifully. This presentation of the script by the New International Encounter theatre company, promises a night of wholesome heroines, cosy comedy, and talented troubadours. As a modern re-telling of the classic fairy tale, there are some differences to the well-known tale. In place of seven dwarfs, we have seven (absolutely seven!) forester eco-conscious forest dwellers. The evil queen, while just as evil and terrifying in her attempts at filicide, raises just as many laughs as parenting concerns. And the magic mirror is no wall flower in this story, singing and dancing with the best of them.

This family friendly tale is laid out via the indefatigable efforts of the chorus – providing narration and scenery, as required. And throughout the story live musicians form part of the action on stage (performing original music by Simon Whitworth). The play is performed in the round, with the audience seated all around the stage as the story is woven around you. On show night, you’ll step into the fine venue of the Linlithgow Burgh Halls and quickly be transported to a magical forest where travelling salespeople offering apples and other wares should not be trusted. Each performance promises to be a fun night out raising smiles and spirits, as the dark nights finally begin to lighten and Winter begins drawing to a close.
